Klimenti: A Village with History and Character

Nestled in the verdant embrace of the Municipality of Sikyonia, in mountainous Corinthia, lies Klimenti, a village that captivates the soul with its simplicity and authenticity. Its name is centuries old: “Klimenti” already appears in the first Ottoman tax register (Katastichon A) of 1461 and in the Venetian census of 1700, when the village had 13 families. It comes from Klimentis, the leader of a large Arvanite clan that settled in the area after 1400. Set on a sheltered hillside, the village offers a sense of peace, far from the bustling world.

Klimenti is not just a place; it is an experience. A living example of the traditional Greek countryside, where time seems to flow more slowly, allowing visitors to attune themselves to the rhythms of nature and enjoy the serenity of its mountain location.

The Nature Around Klimenti

The nature surrounding Klimenti is one of its main protagonists. The area is rich in vegetation, with the surrounding forests generously offering their greenery and shade. A walk along the paths that cross the countryside is an invaluable experience, providing panoramic views and opportunities for encounters with wildlife.

The streams and small springs that run through the area give life to the landscape, while the changing seasons offer a new, enchanting scene each time. In autumn, the colours of nature become more intense; in winter, the landscape is often covered by a thin layer of snow; spring brings rebirth with its flowers; and summer offers coolness under the foliage.

What to See and Do in Klimenti?

A visit to Klimenti is an invitation to relax and discover. The few, but picturesque, houses of the village, built with respect for traditional architecture, form a harmonious whole.

History and Traditions

Klimenti has a long and well-documented history. Written sources on the village and the surrounding area are plentiful: after its first mention in 1461, many more follow from 1700 onwards, and for the period of the Greek War of Independence of 1821 hundreds of documents survive that refer to Klimenti and its people.

The village’s traditions live on through local events, the customs that are still kept and the warm hospitality of its residents, and they have been recorded in detail in studies of Klimenti’s folklore. Life in Klimenti is intertwined with the rhythms of nature and seasonal work.

Further reading: the history and folklore of Klimenti are covered in depth in two extensive books (in Greek) by Konst. G. Kellaris: To Klimenti Korinthias (Istoria-Laografia), Lithos, Kiato 2016, and To Klimenti kai i evryteri periochi tis Korinthias stin Epanastasi tou 1821, Kiato 2021. Both are available in libraries across Corinthia and at the National Library of Greece.

Local Products and Flavours

The mountainous terrain favors the production of quality products. In the wider area of the Municipality of Sikyonia, one finds traditional products such as honey, herbs, and local cured meats. In Klimenti, visitors can enjoy authentic flavours, often derived from local ingredients. The village tavernas offer traditional home-style cooking, using pure products from the land.

A walk through the surrounding fields or a conversation with the locals might reveal the existence of local delicacies, such as wild sweets, mushrooms (seasonal), or handmade products.
