From the urban sprawl of Attica to the olive groves and vineyards of the Corinthian land, the journey sets the tone for a relaxing Mediterranean adventure.

Why Choose the Train for Kiato?

The Proastiakos (Suburban Railway) has radically changed how people access Corinthia. The connection between Athens and Kiato is now frequent, reliable, and exceptionally popular. One of the greatest advantages is the sheer comfort of the journey. Passengers can read a book, catch up on work using the onboard space, or simply gaze out the window as the concrete jungle of the capital fades into the distance.

Furthermore, the route after the Megara region offers some of the most beautiful coastal views in southern Greece. The tracks run parallel to the shoreline, providing panoramic vistas of the Saronic Gulf before crossing the Isthmus of Corinth and moving alongside the Corinthian Gulf. Arriving at Kiato station places you in the heart of a region that pulses with life and offers countless options for every type of traveler, from history buffs to nature enthusiasts.

Schedules and Trip Duration

Schedules from Athens Central Station (Larissis Station) to Kiato are frequent, typically departing every hour. This regularity makes planning a spontaneous day trip incredibly easy. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, a duration that passes quickly thanks to the modern, air-conditioned train sets.

There is also a direct connection from Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos,” which takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes. This makes Kiato one of the most accessible destinations for international visitors who wish to start their Peloponnesian journey immediately upon landing. It is important to note that Kiato station is currently the terminus for the suburban line from Athens. From here, passengers can find OSE bus connections to Patras, but if your goal is to explore Corinthia, Kiato is the ideal base of operations.

The Kiato railway station is a modern facility located just a short distance from the town center. As soon as you step off the train, you will feel the refreshing sea breeze. Kiato is a town that lives and breathes by the water. The first stop for any visitor is usually the coastal zone. With a wide pedestrian promenade stretching along the coast, it is the perfect spot for an initial coffee while watching the fishing boats and sailboats bobbing in the harbor.

The town’s layout is visitor-friendly, with many shops, cafes, and services within walking distance of the station. The atmosphere is authentically Greek—less “touristy” than some other coastal hubs but full of local character and hospitality.

What to See and Do in Kiato and Beyond

While many see Kiato as a transit point, the town and its surroundings hide treasures that deserve to be discovered. This part of Corinthia offers a unique blend of high culture and raw natural beauty.

A Stroll Along the Beach and Harbor

Kiato is famous for its clean waters and organized beaches. You can walk from the harbor toward the Diminio area, where the trees reach almost to the water’s edge. The beach is ideal for families, featuring numerous seaside cafes and taverns serving fresh fish and local “mezedes.” During the summer months, the beach bars create a vibrant atmosphere, while in the winter, the promenade is perfect for quiet, reflective walks under the Mediterranean sun.

Discovering Ancient Sicyon

Located just a few kilometers from the center of Kiato is one of Corinthia’s most significant archaeological sites: Ancient Sicyon. In antiquity, Sicyon was a major center for the arts, renowned for its prestigious schools of painting and sculpture. It was the birthplace of Lysippos, the personal sculptor of Alexander the Great.

Today, visitors can marvel at the impressive Ancient Theater, one of the largest in Greece, carved into the foot of a hill. The theater offers a breathtaking view of the Corinthian Gulf, reminding visitors of the grandeur of the city’s past. Additionally, the Archaeological Museum of Sicyon, housed in a preserved section of the Roman Baths, displays findings that trace the city’s history from the Mycenaean era through to the Byzantine period.

Exploring Lake Stymphalia

For those in the mood for a longer excursion, Kiato is the starting point for the road leading to the highlands of Corinthia. Lake Stymphalia, famous for the sixth labor of Hercules (the Stymphalian Birds), is a place of unique beauty and ecological importance. The Environment Museum of Stymphalia, perfectly integrated into the landscape, offers an educational experience regarding the relationship between man and nature in the region. The wetlands are a birdwatcher’s paradise, especially during migration seasons.

Mountainous Corinthia: Trikala and Ziria

Kiato is the natural exit point for those heading toward Trikala Korinthias. Within less than an hour’s drive, the landscape changes dramatically. You go from the palm trees of the coast to the fir-covered slopes of Mount Kyllini (Ziria). Trikala is divided into three districts—Kato, Mesaia, and Ano—each offering traditional stone architecture, high-end guesthouses, and incredible cuisine based on local meats and the famous cheeses of Corinthia. During the winter, the Ziria Ski Center is a popular spot for snow sports and mountain activities.

Gastronomy: Flavors of the Corinthian Land

A trip to Kiato is incomplete without sampling the local produce. Corinthia is legendary for its agricultural output, and Kiato serves as a hub for these flavors:

• Corinthian Raisins: Known as the “black gold” of the region, these sun-dried grapes have been a staple export for centuries. You will find them in many forms, and they make an excellent, healthy souvenir.
• Nemean Wine: The neighboring Nemea region produces some of Greece’s finest red wines. Be sure to pair your dinner with a local Agiorgitiko, a variety known for its deep color and velvety texture.
• Olive Oil and Olives: The quality of Corinthian olive oil is internationally recognized. The local Manaki and Koroneiki varieties are must-tries.
• Fresh Seafood: In the taverns of Kiato, the fish often comes directly from the Corinthian Gulf. Look for grilled octopus, fried red mullets, and the catch of the day.

Practical Tips for Your Journey

To ensure your train trip from Athens to Kiato is as smooth as possible, keep the following tips in mind:

• Tickets: You can purchase tickets online via the Hellenic Train website or app to avoid queues. Alternatively, there are automated kiosks and ticket offices at Larissis Station and the Airport. If you use the Athens city transport card (ATH.ENA), check the zone limits as Kiato requires a suburban ticket.
