The settlement is located at an altitude of 920 meters on the southern slopes of Mount Kyllini and has a population of 309 inhabitants. It owes its name to a large forest of chestnut trees, which was a source of wealth for the residents but was burned during the Revolution of 1821. The forest with chestnut trees provided the villagers with significant economic comfort during the period of Ottoman rule. As a result, they managed to significantly support the Greek liberation struggle by supplying food and ammunition. The leader of the villagers was the priest Georgios Nikas or Papanikas.
