Stymfalia: Mythology, Nature, and History in Sikyonia

Stymfalia: The Mythic Jewel of the Municipality of Sikyonia

In the hinterland of the Municipality of Sikyonia, where the mountainous Corinthian landscape meets history and myth, lies Stymfalia. This is a place of rare natural beauty, where water dominates the scenery, creating an ecosystem unique throughout the Peloponnese. Stymfalia is not merely a destination; it is a journey through time, where visitors can feel the vibrant presence of Greek mythology coexisting harmoniously with pure, untouched mountain nature.

The landscape around the village and the lake changes magically with the seasons. The surrounding mountains, Ziria and Apesas, embrace the valley, offering a setting of absolute serenity, perfect for those seeking authenticity and contact with nature far from the usual tourist crowds.

The Lake and its Ecosystem

The heart of the region is undoubtedly Lake Stymfalia. It is a mountainous, closed basin (a polje) with rich aquatic vegetation and reed beds, which serves as a refuge for a multitude of rare birds and animals. Migratory birds find a safe haven here, making the area a paradise for nature lovers and birdwatching enthusiasts.

The lake is fed by underground springs and streams, while its waters disappear into sinkholes (the local “zera”), continuing their subterranean journey to emerge elsewhere. This peculiar hydrological system has inspired countless legends from antiquity to the present day.

Mythology and History: The Stymphalian Birds

Stymfalia is world-renowned from Greek mythology as the place where Hercules performed one of his twelve labors: the extermination of the Stymphalian Birds. According to the myth, these man-eating birds with bronze wings had found shelter in the dense vegetation of the lake. With the help of a bronze rattle given to him by the goddess Athena, Hercules managed to frighten them and drive them away.

The history of the region, however, does not stop at myth. On the shores of the lake and the surrounding heights, there are significant archaeological findings, such as the ruins of the ancient city of Stymphalos, with its walls, acropolis, and ancient theater, all of which testify to the prosperity of the area in antiquity. Additionally, Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments, such as the historic monastery of Agios Georgios, add a further spiritual dimension to a visit.
