Kiato in winter: what to do in the off-season
In summer Kiato fills with visitors who come for the sea. In winter the town belongs to its residents again, and that may be the best time to get to know it: a quiet seafront, fishing boats in the harbour, ancient sites without crowds and the mountains of Sikyonia just a few kilometres away.
A walk along the seafront and the harbour
The beach of Kiato stretches for about three kilometres, with a paved promenade along its whole length. In winter it is ideal for walking or cycling, with views across the gulf to the mountains of Central Greece. At one end lies the port of Kiato with its fishing boats and small marina. Finish the walk with a coffee on the seafront or fresh fish at one of the town’s tavernas.
Ancient Sikyon without the queues
Just five kilometres from Kiato lies Ancient Sikyon, one of the most important cities of antiquity. The ancient theatre looks out over the whole Corinthian Gulf, and the Archaeological Museum is housed inside a Roman bath. The winter light and the quiet make a visit far more enjoyable than in the summer heat. Before you go, check the winter opening hours, which are shorter. For the full route, see A day at Ancient Sikyon.
Head for the mountains
The mountains of Sikyonia are very close. In Kryoneri you will find the Byzantine Lechova Monastery and the Observatory, and the cold, clear winter nights are the best for stargazing. Higher up, Kastania, Lake Doxa and Stymphalia take on a different beauty in the snow. For ideas, see Winter in mountainous Sikyonia. If it has snowed, check the road conditions and carry snow chains.
The Sikyonian Carnival

Winter in Kiato ends with the Sikyonian Carnival, when the parade and its floats fill the streets of the town before Lent. The dates change every year because they depend on Easter. To see what is on each month, visit the events page.
Flavours of the season
The plain around the town is known for its sultana grapes, citrus fruit and olive oil. In winter oranges and lemons are in season, and in the local grocery shops of the market you will find olive oil, honey and local products to take home.
